Skat – French image Skat is the most popular German card game for three or four players. The birth was over 200 years ago (1813) in the Thuringian town of Altenburg. Where gambling cards have been produced for more than 500 years, a new game has sprung up in the evening meetings of well-known Altenburger dignitaries. For the game “Scat”, first mentioned on September 4, 1813, the rules were borrowed from various old games. Here the boys are trumps and worth more than the kings. Against the backdrop of the political circumstances of the early nineteenth century, Napoleon ruled over almost the whole of Europe, it is no wonder that the idea of the skat game spread rapidly. With the new game for three players, the Germans overcame French oppression, found unity, and even survived dictatorships and world wars. Even today there are about 20 million skat players in the country, or better: 19 million players and a million players.
